Smokers, the Groundsman

Smokers, the Groundsman

Many Koreans seem to be chain smokers. It might have something to do with all well bodied men being required to serve two years in the military. Or it might be because lots of pressure is put on Koreans from a young age to be successful, go to the best schools, get the best jobs, marry the most beautiful wives, etc. Maybe so many Koreans smoke because of their drinking culture. After all, booze and smokes go hand in hand. I’m not sure the exact reason, but whereas tobacco consumption seems to be decreasing in the western world, here in Asia people are chiefing them down. One such example is the groundsman at my university. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him without a cigarette in his mouth. I always thought the way he smoked was interesting. He never places the cigarette in his fingers. Rather, it’s always bitten down upon, clenched in his teeth. He walks around cleaning up the grounds in this manner, never ashing, never pausing. Always biting down on the butt and smoking as he sweeps. I finally got up the nerve to take his photo as he was doing his work. I shot this with a Canon AE-1 / 50mm prime lens on expired ( 7 / 2010 ) AGFA APX 100 film, bought in bulk and loaded into an empty film canister. I developed the film in the darkroom with D76.
